The Effects of Group Work on Student Learning in Elementary and Junior High Classrooms

Abstract

Recent research shines light on the effectiveness of group work throughout elementary and junior high classrooms. Group work has been a common pedagogical approach used in classrooms, particularly in the elementary and junior high levels. This literature review aims to investigate how students react to using group work, how well students are actually learning using group work, and how students respond to group work in the classroom. Students who participate in group work exhibit higher levels of critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and decision-making skills. Moreover, group work enhances social skills, such as communication, collaboration, and teamwork. Students learn to appreciate diversity and cultural differences, which promotes tolerance and acceptance. This study adopts a bottom-up approach, starting with general research to more specific studies; particularly, focusing on authentic educators conducting studies involving group work in their own classrooms. Overall, group work is beneficial to students' learning and development, as it fosters an inclusive, collaborative, and supportive learning environment.
