Abstract
Social emotional learning (SEL) is a vital part of the curriculum in the classroom. According to Mak and Therriault (2021), SEL can be used to improve behaviors through teaching students SEL skills such as active listening (self- and social awareness), communicating with words (self-management), empathy (social awareness, relationship skills), and perspective taking (social awareness, responsible decision making). Through SEL approach, students’ ability to control their behavior can improve and overall can have a positive effect in a classroom. Along with teaching SEL lessons to students, it is important to incorporate it throughout the entire classroom. A culture of caring and responsiveness supports students’ academic learning by creating a safe classroom climate where students can take risks, make mistakes, collaborate with others and receive support (Berman, 2018). As a response to behavior, integrating DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) as a more refined approach that centers the student to find out what is behind the behavior. Using CASEL’s SEL framework, this study analyzes the effect of the incorporation of SEL and how it affects students’ behavior.
