Abstract

The introduction provides an overview of the entire volume and presents its theoretical framework. The volume’s perspective on children’s culture follows Jacques Rancière’s notion of politics as shaping or contesting the sensory perception of the world shared by members of a community. The discussed aspects of children’s culture thus revolve around three entangled notions: perception of society and the world, individual subjectivity, and community. The dual focus on text and image correlates with Rancière’s notion of political-aesthetic experience as encompassing the visible and the sayable within society.
