Abstract

Motivation to read is essential because the influence of reading can be seen across the curriculum. This study researched the contributing factors to students’ motivation in reading and how parents and teachers can influence the level of motivation among these students. Data was collected qualitatively by way of interviews with a parent and teachers in both first and third grade. Data was also collected through classroom observations. The results of this study show that reading motivation can be increased through various methods in the classroom and at home. It is important that students read at a comfortable level and that they are given a choice in the books they read. Generally younger students are more highly motivated than older students. Further studies on this topic can be done through surveying and interviewing students, parents, and teachers.
